About

11 weeks ago I was handed my pink slip at eToys/BabyUniverse on a brutally cold December morning. I remember standing at the bus stop at 17th and Champa with an overflowing box of my “work stuff” at 2 in the afternoon with Denver downtown business folk looking on like I was to be pitied, but avoided. No one met my eyes. I just sat down in the cold and waited for my bus wondering what to do next. Most of the company was let go that day. A toy company lays off 70% of its work force 10 days before Christmas? Say it ain’t so!
They say one door closes and another one opens… so I started looking for this next open door. And there it was: be poor and stressed out looking for work in the states, or cut our living expenses by 70% by moving abroad. As a web designer, I can “work from anywhere”, so why not look for work in a place that can save my family money and provide adventure as well? Sure beats moving to the suburbs. So, 5 days later, my wife and I had Visas and tickets to the other side of the world. Vietnam! We packed up the house and got rid of over half of our physical belongings. We said goodbye to dear friends and family and stepped on the plane.
And here we are… driving motobikes, eating Bun Cha, and getting the chance to witness the magnificent Vietnamese countryside. Am I sill looking for work? Sure! Am I glad that I’m here? Absolutely!
